- Here's our hands on Nexus 5X review!
Cut to the chase

- When is it out? Ships this October
- What will it cost? $379 for the 16GB model, $429 for the 32GB option
New design, new camera
The
most exciting part of the Nexus 5X might be the camera. It has the best
camera Google has ever put into a Nexus device thanks to its 1.55
micron pixels. Sure, it's just 12.3MP, which at first seems like a low
number compared to its Android rivals. However, the Nexus 5X's extra
microns allow it to capture extra light for superior low-light photos.
That's important for all indoor photos.
This rear ultrapixels-like
camera has a f/2.0 aperture, IR laser-assisted autofocus and shoots 4K
video at 30 frames per second. The front-facing camera is 5MP with the
normal 1.4 microns and the same f/2.0 aperture.
While the camera
is different, the internal specs don't stray too far from the LG G4.
After all, LG is behind this smartphone design. It has the same
Snapdragon 808 processor with a 1.8GHz hexa-core CPU and Adreno 418 GPU.
However, there's 2GB of RAM here instead of the LG G4's 3GB.
The
Nexus 5X fast charges via USB-C in half the time it takes to rejuice an
iPhone. In fact, Google says that 10 minutes of charging the new phone
can get you nearly four hours of battery life.
More
iPhone-rivaling specs are part of the new Nexus 5X, including the
Android Sensor Hub, which seems to be an activity recognition chip to
challenge the Apple's motion processor.
Talking about the Nexus 5X
imprint sensor, Google says it unlocks in less than 600 milliseconds
and has a "incredibly low false reject rate." It gets better over time
with each use, too. The company is betting heavily on Android Pay, where
Apple Pay have cornered the digital wallet market.
Release date and price
Google
says that you can buy the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P through the Google
Store starting today via a pre-order in the US, UK, Ireland and Japan,
with more countries coming in the coming weeks. It'll partner with
leading retailers and partners in other countries.
The confirmed
Nexus 5X price will be $379, with a 90-day Google Play Music and, in the
US at least, a $50 Play credit with all pre-orders. In addition to the
normal manufacturer warranty, it'll tack on an extra year. If something
does happen to your phone, you can get a new holdover device as early as
the next business day. It'll be $69 for this Nexus 5X service. Want to
save more money? The phone will support Google's Project Fi service,
too.
In the UK, the Nexus 5X starts at £339 for the 16GB version and the 32GB costs £379.
Here's everything else we knew about the Nexus 5X before today's announcement...
You know what's going to go perfectly with an Android Marshmallow? S'more of that easy-to-hold Nexus 5 for 2015, and it's official name is Nexus 5X, Google announced today.
The
first phone was the reasonably sized, reasonably priced LG-made device
Google launched 2013, and now that it's confirmed, the sequel is going
to provide the same easy hand-holding.
That's good news for anyone who was disappointed that the Mountain View company stopped selling its acclaimed 5-inch phone earlier this year, in favor of focusing on the much bigger Nexus 6 2014.
LG
is once again making the phone, giving it a specs boost, much-needed
camera upgrade and a high-resolution display that packs more pixels into
the same one-hand-friendly 5 inches.
There's also a new Nexus 6P for 2015, but for non-giants who lack meaty paws, here's what we know about the Nexus 5 refresh in the form of the Nexus 5X.
Nexus 5X 2015 release date
We
have an answer for anyone who asks us, "When is Nexus 5X release date?"
and it's "as soon as Android Marshmallow launches." They're not amused.
Thankfully, we can finally follow up on that cruel joke by pointing to an official Google press conference, and not one, but two rumors that says the new Nexus will launch today, Tuesday, September 29.
The
date makes a lot of sense. Google uses its Nexus devices as a reference
design and pushes out a new phone with every major Android update. This
year, there'll be two phones.
With Android Marshmallow on its
final developer preview as of mid-August, the speculation seems to
indicate an imminent announcement. September 29 sounds exactly right.
Don't get your Google Wallet or Android Pay phone ready just yet. September has been crowded (see: last week's iPhone 6S launch). It won't be delivered until October, which is the same month the Nexus 6 2014 was unveiled and shipped a year ago.
Rumors point to a same-day pre-order date of September 29 in the US, UK and Ireland Korea and Japan, while its thought that the delivery date is October 13, at least in the US.
Nexus 5X 2015 price
The new Nexus 5X price
could once again give us a solid-performing phone at a discount, and
that's a relief because last year's Nexus 6 bumped up the price
considerably.
The LG-built Nexus 5X price starts at $379/£339/AU$659 for the 16GB version and goes up to $429/£449 for the 32GB model.
Contrasting
with the Nexus 5X even further today will be the phone's phablet
cousin, Google and Huawei's Nexus 6P, which starts at $499/£449/AU$899
for a 32GB model, bumps up to $549/£499 for 64GB and tops out at
$649/£579 for 128GB.
Nexus 5X 2015 design
Phone designs are trending in the direction of premium build materials, like the glass-and-metal Samsung Galaxy S6 and the leather-backed LG G4. You won't get that from Google's affordable handset, however.
Instead,
the Nexus 5X is backed by a matte plastic back cover, confirming all of
the leaked photos and rumors we've heard in the lead up to today's
launch.
That image was followed up
by a shot showing the side of the phone, this time with an original
Nexus 5 below it for comparison. They look very similar, but the new
model is quite a bit slimmer and has differently positioned buttons.
Another
image of the Nexus 5X 2015 was revealed by a case maker, this time
giving us a good glance of what the front of the new device could look
like.
It
shows a front-facing selfie camera, front-facing speakers and two
pretty thick bezels on the top and bottom of the screen, which means the
new Nexus 5X 2015 probably isn't going to be the most compact or svelte
of phones.
Other Nexus 5X 2015 design rumors include front-facing
speakers and an aluminium frame, though the side shot we've seen looks
distinctly plastic.
Android Marshmallow is pushing USB Type C
support for the first time, and the Nexus 5X is destined to make an
example of its use. Why let the OnePlus 2 have all of the fun, being the only phone with this next-generation connector?
Renowned leaker account @OnLeaks also posted an image on Twitter
that apparently shows the new Nexus 5X 2015 in all its glory. The image
ties in with other rumours we've heard about the Nexus 5X 2015, and
@OnLeak's reputation is pretty solid when it comes to revealing upcoming
phones.
Plus we have word of color choices. A new render
suggests the phone will be available in black, white and "mint." As you
can see in the photo below they're all quite mellow colors - one might
say Marshmallow colors - and nothing really stands out here. There may
be more plastic flavors to come though, we'll have to wait and see on
September 29.
Nexus 5X 2015 display
Expect an LG-made Nexus 5X to stick with a battery-friendly 1080p display instead of going the quad HD route that will likely be chosen for the new Nexus 6P 2015.Yes, it can still be called a Nexus 5X, even with this minor screen size adjustment. Phone manufacturers like round up or down when considering a device's name, so larger display isn't all too surprising.
Nexus 5X 2015 specs
The new Nexus 5X may put "premium" in its internal specs instead of its body or display, and that seems to be what new benchmark leaks indicate. It's pegged to have a Qualcomm processor, with rumors hinting at a Snapdragon 808 chip. That makes sense, as the LG G4 has the same hexa-core CPU.
This way, with the Nexus 5X, it'll avoid the Snapdragon 810 slowdown and overheating issues that we all got burned on (pun intended) with the LG G Flex 2 at the top of this past year.
The best phones in the latter half of 2015 are boosting their performance from 3GB to 4GB RAM, but that would double the memory from two years ago.
More reasonable estimates have the Nexus 5X RAM at 2GB, and the internal storage starting at 16GB and making room for a slightly more expensive 32GB option.
Nexus 5X 2015 camera
If there's one thing Google needs to get right with its next Nexus, it's making a phone with a great camera. Nexus fans have consistently complained about mediocre photos.Rumors point to a 13MP snapper on back, with a wide f/1.8 aperture lens, LG's advanced laser autofocus, optical image stabilisation and a dual-LED flash.
The Nexus 5X camera design is preparing us for a weird camera bulge in the back of the phone, but the fact that is oddly juts out makes us think there's something of worth inside.
Save for the 16MP sensor and the dual-LED flash, its camera specs match the LG G4. Next to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the newer Galaxy Note 5, it's the best smartphone camera out there.
Nexus 5X 2015 battery life
The Nexus 5X 2013 battery life was the phone's second biggest problem, and LG may address that by upping the capacity from 2,300mAh to 2,700mAh or even 3,180mAh.Now, if LG could do a better job of reducing its handset battery drain, that would be perfect. The G4 had issues with background tasks eating away at otherwise solid battery capacity.
The Android Marshmallow release date looks ready for today, Tuesday, September 29, and that almost certainly means that the LG-made Nexus 5X 2015 will be at the launch event, too.
We'll keep updating this page live while at Google's San Francisco press conference, adding the last-minute rumors and official confirmations as the smaller phone's big announcement gets underway.
